The Island of Peace

You can experience a real journey through time when you visit the Esterházy Castle in Tata. The permanent exhibition tells the story of the Esterházy family’s count lineage. The castle has hosted royal guests on several occasions and was even the place where the famous peace treaty with Napoleon, the “Peace of Schönbrunn”, was signed. The castle, situated on the shores of the picturesque Old Lake, is therefore rightly called the “Island of Peace”.

The most beautiful room in the Esterházy Castle is the luxurious dining room, with its restored wood paneling and portraits of the Esterházy ancestors. The tower room has a wonderful atmosphere with its three walls offering a magnificent view of the park and the lake. The original treasures of the palace are particularly impressive: paintings, stoves, a 370-year-old clock, original tiles and baths in the bathrooms are unique. The chapel has also been restored, as has the altar, which is over 200 years old.

The palace also has a banqueting hall, a souvenir shop and a café where visitors should definitely try a delicious piece of Esterházy cake.

Active recreation

Thousands of shades of green, suspension bridge and footbridges, turtles, frogs, dragonflies and water lilies await you in the enchanted marshlands of Tata. The Fényes Nature Trail is an endless wonderland of wilderness.

Walk along one of the most spectacular hiking trails in Hungary!

The scenic trail, dotted with wild landscapes, lookouts and resting places, leads for more than 1 km through the magical swamp forest. The protected nature reserve is open to visitors all year round. Thanks to the karst springs, the lake does not freeze in the cold.

This is a very atmospheric and varied ecotourism trail with 18 stations, where visitors can interactively discover the world of swamp forests and karst springs, the plants and animals that live there, climb the observation tower and cross the water lily pond. The scenery is stunning, the lush green, steamy marshlands have a unique atmosphere, as if you were walking in a tropical forest rather than Hungary.
